Sexual abuse show shows an association with the development of psychiatric disorders. Chen, Murand, Para, Colbenson, Sattler, Goranson, Elamin, Seime, Shinozaki, prokop and Zirakzadeh ( Mayo Clinic Proceedings, July 2010: 85(7); 618-629) conducted a meta- analysis of 37 studies January 1980 through December 2008. In brief the authors conclude that sexual abuse is associated with a myriad of psychiatric disorders including sleep disturbance, depression, anxiety, post traumatic stress, attempted suicide, and eating disorders. They go on to postulate that early identification of a sexual abuse history may lead to better treatment and outcomes for these patients.
