A Los Angeles times article  “Babylon and Beyond ” draws attention to what happens to women who are raped in the United Arab Emirates. Seems gender is a more significant crime than rape. Women are often disbelieved and may even be imprisoned themselves. The article should be entitled… when gender is a crime or behind the veil women as second class citizens.  According to Nadya Khalife, a researcher working with Human Rights Watch in the Middle east and North Africa,  “the majority of women do not report rape or other crimes of sexual assault . . . women who have been raped fear they will not be take seriously, or that they will also be charged with a crime . . . a rape victim may be pressured by her own family to not report a crime or press charges against the perpetrator, or even be forced to marry the same man who raped her.”
