drinkingDrug facilitated sexual assault  (DFSA) is on the rise.  DFSA  occurs when drugs or alcohol are used to compromise an individual’s ability to consent to sexual activity.  Any kind of drug that can impair one’ capacity to consent can be implicated in DFSA. More commonly alcohol in combination with licit or illicit substances are identified in DFSA. There has been an increase in the number of reports of possible DFSA across the nation.  Although we tend to think that DFSA only involves illicit drugs of abuse, alcohol is perhaps the number one drug used in  DFSA.   It’s important to remember that even if you are under the influence sexual assault is not your fault.  If you believe you have had been the victim of a DFSA it is imperative that you seek immediate medical care as several drugs used in DFSA metabolize rapidly and cannot be detected after twelve hours or so.  Often sexual assault treatment teams can collect blood or urine samples that become part of the evidentiary data to be used for later criminal prosecution.  Although you may have been drugged most facilities do not have the ability to detect these substance as they require special laboratory analysis.  The important message here is to seek immediate medical care.
